Gently Falls the Bakula

Having read her non-fictional works like 'The day I stopped drinking milk' and 'Wise and Otherwise', I never thought that Mrs. Sudha Murthy could do the same justice to fiction too!! 'Gently falls the Bakula' proved me wrong. She has put so much thought into the description that the characters just enact it frame by frame in the minds of the readers. The story relates to the most common dilemmas every young and intelligent women experiences.....whether to listen to the mind or heart? How far should the married life take precedence over the career?? How does the ideology of success and approach towards life differ for men and women?? Where to set the limit to sacrifice of staying the candle with a lighted wick for the family?? Does happiness only come with the so-called 'settling down' for a woman?? Should society be the only obligation for staying together in a suffocating relationship?? If happiness lies in chasing dreams, then was it the dream of every housewife-turned young girl to be a good home-maker someday??
The author just chalks down the innermost feelings and struggles of every wife with a busy husband who has no time to spend with her and is left with no choice but to keep thinking that she is being treated as nothing more than a house-keeping executive, a caretaker for the guests and elderly, a babysitter or an unpaid personal assistant. Mrs.Murthy deserves appreciation for voicing the struggle of the highly educated housewives so well.

Ego with Privileges and Boundaries

Why did Sigmund Freud's imagination end with Id, Ego and Superego?? I badly hope he had another category too.... 'Ego with Privileges and Boundaries'!! He missed it just by whiskers because of his background in Neurology rather than practical and contemporary psychology. So, let me take the liberty (in his absence) to explain the new entry, which stands between Id and Ego on the continuum.
Let us call it EPB (sounds something like ESP, pun intended!!). It is that part of the personality that drives us to be instinctive as well as conforming. It is impulsive or feels privileged when the surroundings are familiar and the faces around belong to the preferred in-group. On the other hand, it is conscientiously aware to draw boundaries and condition the behavior to the level where not just outwardly conduct but also the impressions and perceptions about us to the rest of the world hold significance. EPB is the blend of contrasts that keep alternating between childish abandon to the alert and practiced decency. While such a person is a pleasure to the members of the coterie, he is a hard nut to crack for the out-group and is a source of constant confusion and apprehension for the people waiting to take the person into confidence.

Cheliyaa

Cheliyaa....very intricately made masterpiece.... The undercurrent of ego interspersed with madness and realization in combination with love, independence and confusion is a highly complicated subject... Portraying these qualities on-screen itself is difficult... Mani Ratnam did a great job. Kudos to him!! Karthi does equal justice too in the role of being both fighter pilot and an ardent lover!! AR Rehman weaves the magic, especially with the vocals of Abhay Jodhpurkar and Chinmayi in 'Allei allei'. Cinematography is absolutely breathtaking with the backdrop of Kashmir and Himalayas.

Varanasi

Life is the span between the shore where our feet find the grounding and that far away horizon where sun meets the land!!
